LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Athletics and Physical Education

This course is designed for educators, coaches, and administrators who are interested in learning more about LGBTQ+ inclusion in athletics and physical education. The course will cover best practices on sports inclusion, as well as highlight the mental and physical health benefits related to sports participation for these populations.

The course will explore the following topics: a) the benefits of athletics and physical education b) barriers to physical activity/sports participation for LGBTQ+ folks c) strategies educators can use to support LGBTQ+ participation in athletics and physical education
Through lecture and discussion, participants will gain insights into best practices for LGBTQ+ inclusion in athletics and physical education. Participants will leave with concrete strategies to incorporate in their program.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify five benefits of athletics and physical education participation for LGBTQ+ individuals
  • Describe at least three barriers to inclusion for LGBTQ+ populations
  • Explain at least five strategies to create more inclusive physical education and athletics environments

Presenters

Cory Nyamora, PsyD. is a licensed psychologist and endurance sports coach. He is the founder and director of Endurance – A Sports & Psychology Center, Inc., a Center that provides endurance coaching for beginner and experienced athletes, as well as sports psychology and clinical psychology services to children, adults, couples and families. He specializes in work with LGBTQIA individuals and families. He provides trainings for organizations and athletes on topics related to the intersections of sports, mental health and overall wellness.
